Youth Street Band

Our youth street band, for members age 11-18, rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 6-7pm in Windmill Hill (BS3).

Mixed ability band
Our aim is for the band to be as inclusive as possible. We therefore welcome brass, woodwind and percussion players of a variety of levels, ideally grade 2 upwards. While we do not provide instrumental teaching within the weekly rehearsal sessions, we can tailor parts for individuals based on their playing ability. We can also provide instrumental teaching outside of the weekly rehearsal sessions to support the development and progress of band members.

Music taught by ear
There is no requirement for our street band players to be able to read music, although this would be an advantage. All tunes are taught by ear and led using hand signals but sheet music and recordings are provided to support practice at home.

Percussion instruments provided
We can provide drums/hand held percussion instruments or you are welcome to bring your own if preferred. Wind players currently need to bring their own instruments with them, although we are hoping to be able to provide wind instruments to those who need them in the future.

Regular gig opportunities
Band members will have the opportunity to perform regularly at local festivals, parades and community events. Our adult and youth members learn the same repertoire and perform together as one large band.

Free taster session
The cost per rehearsal session is £6, payable termly in advance. We offer a free taster session to any new members so you can try it out before committing to the whole term.

Reasons I love Bright Sounds:
* I get to play joyous, uplifting music with lots of improvisation.
* I play drums for at least 80% of the rehearsal, not sitting round whilst the guitarist's decide on a key etc.
* I get the chance to play with high calibre musicians, complete novices and recently returning musicians in a supportive, non-judgemental environment.
* It makes me smile.
